I'm terrified I may get dementia. I'm forgetful. I'm sure you've walked into a room and forgotten why you went there.

We've all experienced that.

There's the joke where the wife walks into the bedroom and wonders out loud why she's there. Her husband stops dressing and answers: You came in for sex, remember?

While that may be amusing — dementia isn't.

I'm forgetting people's names. Sometimes, I can't remember how to spell a word.

Dementia can strike at any age, but I'm the age where it's not uncommon.

A national study has found that 10% of Americans ages 65 or over have dementia. This number doubles every five years above that age.

Dementia is front and center for me daily as I'm caring for a loved one who is suffering from this frightening ailment.

Neither my parents nor my grandparents suffered from dementia. Still, it's possible I could.
