I quit drinking over five years ago after failing twice. I didn’t give up.

I knew if I kept drinking, it would eventually be the cause of my demise.

I wanted to write, create art again, and have more energy. My list of reasons was long and critical for me to accomplish.

I developed resilience by following the list below, though at the time, I wasn’t aware that it was a list that mental health professionals recommend.

Some of these ideas came naturally to me, and others I learned from reading quit-lit.

Most humans have endured challenges and have suffered defeat by the time they have attained adulthood.

Resilience is an ability we can learn. It’s our capacity to recover from adversity.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the definition of resilience is:

  • The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, toughness.
  • The ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape, elasticity.
