A support group helped Alec Baldwin find sobriety. He had this to say:

I want to know why we become addicted. Is there a trait we possess that the take-it-or-leave-it drinkers don’t have?

Could it be a gene? The research says no, though we retain the predisposition to be addicted if one of our parents were.

Environmental factors — such as our upbringing, a painful childhood, or the drinking of alcohol modeled for us could contribute to our addiction.
