At Last: Surgeon Generals’s Startling Call for Cancer Risk Labels on Alcoholic Beverages

Has the day finally arrived to admit alcohol is unfit for human consumption?

There is a direct link between alcohol consumption and at least seven types of cancer, including the breast, colorectal, liver, and mouth. Cancers of the throat, esophagus, and larynx are also known to be caused by consuming alcohol.

An estimated 16.4% of total breast cancer cases are linked to drinking alcohol.

Both my sister and I had breast cancer. We both drank for many years and were diagnosed after quitting drinking. I was alcohol-free for five years when diagnosed, and my sister was AF for over 12.

Quitting drinking is a start to becoming cancer-free, but the results aren’t immediate.

The U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s report shows that there are about 100,000 alcohol-related cancer cases and about 20,000 alcohol-related cancer deaths in the U.S. each year.

The Surgeon General reports that “the majority of Americans are unaware of this risk.”
