In This Naked Mind, Annie Grace relates how her father quit drinking and smoking just like that. He gave it up, never to relapse even once. That seems miraculous to me.

I quit drinking, too. Only not quite as easily. It took two years of daily reading and absorbing books written by women who had successfully attained sobriety.

I gave up alcohol twice and relapsed within a couple of months. However, I persevered, and the third time did the trick.

I’ve now been alcohol-free for almost five years. I am thrilled and proud and know I will never relapse again.

I did not attend A.A. I didn’t go to therapy or a rehab facility. I did it on my own, with my self-induced motivation, willpower, and a strong desire to succeed.

Recovering from addiction unassisted is what is known as spontaneous sobriety.

A short time after achieving sobriety, I did attend SMART Recovery meetings for additional support.

Click below for the five books that helped me quit drinking.
