I was like the woman in the movie When Harry Met Sally — “I’ll have what she’s having!” Only it wasn’t sex I wanted. I wanted sobriety.

I’d been reading quite a bit about people who had been addicted and sobered up. I liked what I read. These former drinkers appeared exuberant and excited about their new lives. I wanted that.

Now I have it and am thrilled and proud, and it got me reminiscing about the first few months of my sobriety.

What a time of high emotions, cravings, indecision, and concerns I may fail.

After two years of false starts, I attained sobriety six and a half years ago.

It hasn’t always been an easy ride. The road was often bumpy and filled with potholes. I, however, was able to navigate them successfully, though not always gracefully.

In the very beginning

Becoming alcohol-free wasn’t entirely solo, though I consider my way a DIY job. I read tons of quit-lit books (here are my five favorites), and after a month of being alcohol-free, I occasionally attended SMART Recovery…
