I Was Just a Kid: I Recall the 2 Times My Parents Truly Supported Me and I Felt Loved
Sometimes, parents show their love in unusual ways.
The chain-link fence was too tall for my sister and me to climb, so we decided to crawl under it. We had to dig several inches into the dry earth to squeeze our nine and ten-year-old bodies beneath it.
The pool, with its crystal clear water, was waiting beyond. But why were we attempting to get into Pascack Pool? I don’t remember our motivation; I only remember that we were determined to break in.
I’m sure it was a silly childhood prank; after all, neither of us was a strong swimmer. Plus, school would be out in another few weeks, our summer camp would begin, and we’d be at the pool daily.
Once on the other side, the grounds seemed foreign. The snack shack was closed and locked, but picnic tables were freshly painted and waiting under the ramada for the campers due soon.
Suddenly, we heard a deep voice, followed by a large man rounding the shack and grabbing hold of me. He demanded why we were on his property and how we got in.
We stuttered that we were curious and wanted to see what the camp and pool were like.
