I'm happy for you that you found what works for you. The basic premise of calories in calories out works as long as one isn't cutting back too much on food intake. You're right your metabolism will cut back if you're not consuming enough. Exercise is also a great aid in losing weight--as you are doing with your walks. Great. job, Billy.
