The most common cause is excessive alcohol consumption causes nitric oxide levels in the lungs to fall. Nitric oxide fights bacteria in the lungs. Without a whole host of breathing difficulties can happen. There is also the possibility of lung cancer. All possibilities of various cancers is greater for the over drinker.
